Although Newport, Rhode Island was never considered a major clock making
center, a number of extraordinarily fine cases were constructed there between
1750 and 1800. Typically, the movement makers were given the credit for the
entire clock, while the cabinet makers of the cases are given little or no
credit. The clock cases of Newport are the only ones of which it can be said
that the case is more important than the movement. As quoted by Wallace Nutting,
a highly regarded antique collector and historian, “the block-and-shell clocks
of Newport make a strong bid for supremacy in style and beauty as compared with
any other cabinetwork whatsoever”.
Bartley’s Newport Tall Case Clock is copied from one made circa 1770 and is associated with the Goddard or Townsend cabinet shops of Newport. The many exquisite features of this clock include a broken arch top with serpentine moldings ending in spiral carved rosettes. The finials are fluted on an urn holding graceful flames. The masterfully executed block-and-shell carved door is flanked by fluted quarter columns. The veneered base panel is framed with chamfered and lamb’s tongue corners and ogee bracket feet.
The eight day driven movement included with the clock is made by one of the world’s finest manufacturers. It plays a portion of the Westminster chimes every quarter of the hour with the full tune played at the hour followed by the strikes of the hour. The movement includes a silencer switch and a night shut-off option. The face is a faithful copy with all the details including the day/date wheel and moon dial.
The Newport Tall Case Clock is
available in Cherry, Curly Maple, Walnut and Mahogany (like the original).
