The cannonball symbol used on bedsteads came into style in the late 18th
Century as a patriotic emblem of the colonies victory in the Revolutionary
War.
This truly American bed, which had no equal in Europe, features boldly turned posts topped with a perfectly proportioned cannonball finial.
The extraordinary headboard is a generous 35.5" high and is capped with a detachable "rolling pin", a rarely used element of similar beds reproduced today. Originally, this detachable rolling pin had a very useful purpose, to smooth out lumpy feather beds. The foot posts are joined by a beautifully turned blanket rail. In all, this Cannonball Bed has 18 separate turnings that include the post, finials, rolling pin and blanket rail.
As with all Bartley's beds and those of the 18th Century, the rails connect with a strong mortise and tenon joint, held secure with bed bolts. The bolt holes are hidden with brass medallion cover.
This is a marvelous bed with
perfect proportions and style, and is ideal for bedrooms that cannot accommodate
the taller four poster bed. It is a sturdy and solid bed built to last for
generations. Available in Cherry, Curly Maple and Walnut. The side rails are
made of poplar. The head posts are 62" high and the foot posts are 53" high.
Queen bed is 65.5"W x 86"L.
