In 1989 a Newport Block and Shell Secretary sold at auction for $12,100,000, the most ever paid for a piece of furniture. Only eleven of this type of Secretary were ever built, and most are proudly displayed in our nation's finest museums.

Our desk is an accurate reproduction of one made by John Townsend, circa 1765. Our bookcase, in deference to modern 8 foot ceilings, relies heavily on the smaller examples to maintain proportion and scale. It is there "compact" Secretaries that many think are the most beautiful of the eleven made.

The upper case has an open bonnet adorned with three beautifully carved urn and flame finials. The sides are fronted with fluted quarter columns and the tri-fold doors are blocked in typical Newport fashion, each topped with a curved shell. The interior has three adjustable shelves. The lid on the desk is beautifully executed with convex shells on either side flanking the concave one in the middle. The interior is classic Goddard/Townsend Newport with six cubbyholes, eight drawers and four secret compartments. The three graduated drawers are blocked; each cut from a single board. The case is supported by bold, thick molding and uniquely carved ogee feet. The brasses are solid and are custom made for this piece. Available in Cherry, Curly Maple, and Mahogany.
