Philadelphia, Circa 1760-1780.
No single piece in Bartley's history has ever stirred so much interest and
excitement as our Tea Table. Only a very few of these tables are in
private hands, and on the rare occasion when one comes to auction, they command
record prices. This particular Tea Table sold for $1,542,000 at Christie's
in 1999.
Clearly the craftsman that created this table had the extraordinary design
and carving skills necessary to create a masterpiece. The table is
perfectly proportioned with its ten segment scalloped tilt and turn top
supported by a birdcage device. The fluted pedestal sits over a compressed
ball carved with meandering leafage, while the lower post has a dense
ribbon-and-flower carved band. The strength of the legs is lightened by the
extraordinary flow of the carved knees and the continuous sweep of the slender
ankles that pursue the talons. The transition to the stunning cabriole
leg is perfect and the strong talons grasping the bold feet almost give motion
to the table.
We are offering Bartley Collectors who demand the very best the opportunity to buy this table with a "single board" top. In other words, one board, not a top that is made from several boards glued together. This feature, rare even in the 18th century, was used only on the finest tea table tops because of the scarcity of Mahogany in this width. This, combined with the table's superior design elements, makes this truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. Available in Mahogany. The Table measures 28.5"H with a 34" diameter top. NOTE: Any kit we offer that is $1000 or more will require a 30% deposit at the time of scheduling. This deposit is fully refundable until we begin cutting the kit. (If a kit has already been scheduled we will require the 30% deposit at the time of order. What this means is that if we do not have a tentative ship date we will not charge the deposit.) At the time we begin cutting the kit we will require an additional 30% deposit. At this time both deposits are non-refundable. You will not be charged for the balance of payment until your kit is ready to ship.
