These stools were built by German immigrants in Pennsylvania during the late 18th century. The tall backs offered stability when trying to reach high shelves. When not in use, it was often kept in a corner for children who needed to contemplate the error of their ways. It was because of this that the stool acquired the nickname “pouting chair”.
